The first Intel celeron, codenamed Covington, didn't include any L2 cache and was very slow. Intel realized very quickly the Celeron needs an L2 cache and built another core, the Mendocino. So, only the early Celeron have no cache built-in. This engineering sample of the Covington core comes with 0 KB of L2 cache and a frequency of 266 MHz with a FSB of 66 Mhz. It was built in December '97 while the first Celeron announced was released on April '98
